What is Florida Water?

Firstly before we continue let us look at what this Florida water is. Florida water started out as a cologne in late 1808 by a new york city perfumer named Robert I. Murray. The name Florida water comes from the Spanish word for flower. ”flor”. It was adapted for America from a popular German perfume that was created in 1709. It was a unisex perfume because of it’s sweet floral and citrus notes, yet it was strong spicy and herbal notes.

In those days cologne was used to freshen everything, and not just to wear on the skin. So it has a long history as a perfume, but the question is where exactly do it’s magical uses come in?

Florida water popularly used in Voodoo, Hoodoo, and also Santeria, one of the theories is that the slaves used Florida water in magical practice to hide it from their Christian owners. This is the same reason Voodoo, and Hoodoo spells often use the bible today. So as the slaves worked, they used Florida water to secretly infuse magical cleansing into all their chores.

So Florida water made itself stable in some Hispanic spiritual practices but the reason for this is also largely unknown.

Another theory is that because of the already established magical uses of the ingredients of Florida water, it was a convenient way to access their magical properties since it was something most people had on hand those days anyway.

Even up to this day it is very easy to find, inconspicuous, readily available, and also affordable to buy. So even witches in the broom closet can use it to secretly infuse magic into their daily lives.
